Job Security
Today in the 10th grade, we had a discussion about gun control in the U.S. These discussions aren't usually very spirited, since pretty much everyone is of the same opinion (guns are bad). There's one kid in the class, though, who likes to play devil's advocate (especially since I've been working with them on debating skills all year):
Maya (pro-gun control): Forbidding guns won't hurt the economy!
Johan (devil's advocate): It will! Think of the man in the gun shop! Where will he go? What will he do now?
Maya: He doesn't have to work in a gun shop! He will work somewhere else.
Johan: But his training is guns! He has no other skills.
Maya: He could learn. But who else will suffer?
Johan: Think of the doctors! In the Bronx, for example, a doctor has maybe 10 people shot down each day. And must he learn new skills if he can't work there?
I laughed until I cried (you might have to imagine it with thick German accents) - I've never heard of job security for doctors cited as an argument against gun control. Later, Johan proposed criminalizing cars, knives, swords, rope, hands, and tables because they are also used to kill. I asked him to explain the table thing, and he said "I punch someone with a table." I may not be accomplishing anything here, but at least I'm getting a good laugh....

I punch people with tables all the time. It hurts like hell. And for the record I don't think gun control is at all an effective solution. Let Johan know I support him and his punching people with tables.
I will second those statements.... also I want to be best friends with Johan!
