A true story
Today in the 6th grade, we continued to work on the simple past and I had the following conversation (originally in German - my students aren't that good).
Kevin: How long are you staying in Germany? Are you coming to 7th grade with us next year?
Me: No, I'm going home at the end of June.
Mark: How come?
Me: Because my time here is up - I won't have an apartment anymore, I won't get paid anymore, my visa will be up....
Mark: But why can't you stay and be our English teacher?
Me: Because I'm going home.
Kevin: But why are you going home?
Me: The government won't let me stay.
Kevin: We could hide you from them!
Mark: There's an empty classroom down the hall! No one ever uses it.
Me: But I wouldn't have a job anymore, I wouldn't get paid. And what about my boyfriend? And my dog?
Kevin: You could bring them over!
Me: But he has a job, and besides, he can't speak German.
Mark: Leave your boyfriend!
Kevin: Yeah, leave your boyfriend in America.
Me: And my dog?
Mark: Bring the dog!
Me: He's too big to fly.
Kevin: Get a boat! You could just steal a boat, like, a motorboat or a yacht!
Me: Um. I don't steal boats.
Mark: Or you could borrow one! Bill Gates has a yacht, right? Borrow his yacht and sail to Germany!
