Thank god the air mattress is gone!
The air mattress has been packed up and put away, the desk got cleaned, and things are almost back to normal. Actually, though, I'm sad that Tre and Emma are gone. Well, mostly gone. I do have some shampoo and conditioner (Emma), a bath mitt (Tre), half a bar of chocolate (Tre) and a box of girl scout cookies to remind me of them.
There's been a lot going on since I blogged last. Emma and Tre visited, we ate a lot, went to the opera, saw the new (to me) Hugh Grant movie, and shopped. I'm pretty sure they did other cultural stuff while I was at the Fulbright conference, which was halfway interesting and halfway silly. The problem with this (as with most) conferences is that it was essentially unproductive. I did meet some people, including one girl who is working with immigrant kids in my area of Berlin, so it wasn't a total loss. I also learned that you can get a Fulbright for just about any research project, including an exploration of the klezmer scene in Berlin or writing historical fiction about a character who lived in Berlin. Maybe it's more difficult with other countries? In other news, I chipped a tooth and had my first experience with German dentistry. I'm happy to report that my dentist was both nice and competent - drilling (with no anesthesia) and everything, and my tooth stopped aching a few hours later, which is a record for me. Luckily, the chipped tooth didn't quite coincide with the baby shower I threw for Inga. I've never thrown a baby shower before, and while it wasn't quite what I'd been planning/hoping for, she seemed ok with it. Considering that we only decided to do this last week, and that she told me Thursday night that she'd rather have it Saturday than Sunday, and that I wasn't even close to done crocheting the damn teddy bear, I pulled it off remarkably well.

Holy crap... I'm not jealous of your baby shower experience at all! We did one for Brina's sister last year, and the midget is turning 1 here pretty soon and so are 2 of her cousins, so Cebrina has told me that we will be having a 3-way 1st birthday party... I'm not thrilled... I'm also not thrilled with the fact that it will be held the weekend that Nick will be in town. I'm padlocking my door. I don't want any fucking midgets in there covered in frosting. Or in there period. I think the main reason I'm so spiteful is because Brina's sister is preggo again! Same worthless daddy... She swears that they were on BC and used a condom. This is what she said about Maddisun too... well for one I don't believe her... and for two, if that is the case and they did indeed use two forms the first time, shouldn't she have realized that he has super sperm that can break through condoms at will? And then not had sex with him... because he's a nasty douchebag! Sorry I'm having difficulty with the general stupidity of Christine... Now that I've written a novel... I'll be done.
Yes, well, I thought you could use some Herbal Essence in your life... Actually, it was good I didn't take it since I was stripped of all liquids in Newark (but I hid my chocolate well!!). I also think I need to meet your friend Amanda, simply because she perpetrated (can you say that?) the sentence, "I don't want any fucking midgets in there covered in frosting."
Hugs!
Emma
