A better day...

Yesterday was Tag des Oeffenen Denkmals here in Berlin - all that really means is that there are tours and such at all the various memorials in the city. I was apartment hunting, so I didn't make it to very many, but I did go to the new Holocaust memorial (above). It's amazing. I remember how I felt when I first learned about the Holocaust - I don't know when I stopped feeling that way about it, but this memorial does a lot to bring back that awe and terror at the human capacity for evil.

On a completely different note, things are looking up!
The good news:

  • I found my school
  • I registered my temporary address with The Authorities
  • I opened a bank account
  • I got a permanent, furnished room with a great roommate (details to follow)
But, of course, there is also the bad news:
  • My school is every bit as chaotic and disorganized as Brigitte described it
  • Brigitte (current mentor teacher) and Dagmar (future mentor teacher) seem to hate each other
  • The woman with whom I am currently staying was told by someone that I'd be living with her for a year, and I think she is a little miffed that this is not my plan.
I'm sure it will all work out one way or another....

Oooh. The Authorities. Were they scary? I always found great pleasure in the stamp they give you when you're "approved"
